You've followed a letter across a living room and watched every chapter fire at once. But everything in this book so far has happened on a page. The waves themselves are still out there, still invisible, still politely ignoring you. This last little chapter is about fixing that. Not with a course, or a kit that costs a fortune: with two small machines, one older than your great-grandparents and one younger than most of your socks.
The radio with no battery#
Start with the oldest one still standing. A crystal radio has no battery and no plug. Nothing powers it at all, except the wave itself. The faint ripple a station threw into the sky from miles away arrives at your wire carrying a whisper of real energy, and that whisper alone is enough to make sound in your ear. The distant transmitter does all the work.
And you already know every part, because you spent a chapter with each one. A long wire, strung out a window or along a fence, catches the wiggle exactly as chapter 8, Throwing and catching waves, described. A coil and a capacitor make the swing from chapter 14, Inside the receiver: push at one station's rhythm and only that station rings loud. A tiny crystal diode keeps just the top half of the wave, and the thin metal skin of an earphone rides the envelope of those tops. That is the AM detector from chapter 5, Carrying a voice, made of three parts you can hold in your palm.
Kids have built these for a century, winding the coil around an oatmeal box, and yours will take about an afternoon, with parts that cost less than lunch. Then wait for dark. When the mirror in the sky from chapter 12, Bouncing off the sky, lowers itself into place, a good crystal set catches stations from absurdly far away, powered entirely by the whisper it caught.
The fifteen-dollar miracle#
The second machine looks like nothing at all: a little USB stick, originally sold as a cheap TV tuner, that goes by the name RTL-SDR. Plug it into a laptop, add free software, and the laptop becomes a software-defined radio: a receiver for very nearly everything, from below the AM band up through the airplane and GPS bands, stopping just shy of Wi-Fi, for about the price of a pizza.
Its window onto the air is called the waterfall. Frequency runs across, time pours slowly down, and every signal glows as a stripe. If that picture feels familiar, it should. It is the lane map from chapter 3, From ripples to radio, suddenly real, live, and full of traffic.
The fat, confident stripes are FM stations from chapter 6, each filling the wide lane that chapter 16 priced for it.
What you'll catch on day one#
The FM lanes show up first: fat, confident stripes, each one as wide as chapter 16, The wave recipe, said it had to be, wiggling exactly the way chapter 6 promised. Then stand near the window and lock your car. A thin column of dots blinks on the screen for half a second: your key fob, spelling out its secret in on-off bits, chapters 18 and 19 caught red-handed in one click.
Keep going and the sky opens up. Airplanes announce themselves overhead all day long, broadcasting their own positions by radio, and the free software will happily draw them on a map for you: chapter 28's world of measuring, live above your roof. And with one cheap extra antenna, you can catch a weather satellite as it passes and have it hand you an actual photograph of the Earth, taken minutes ago, received by you.
Here is the quiet punchline. Everything after the antenna, the whole roomful of circuitry that chapter 14 walked through, is, inside an SDR, just math. The dongle takes millions of snapshots of the wave every second, the snapshots of chapter 17, Turning waves into numbers, and the laptop does arithmetic on them. Tuning, mixing, detecting: all of it is now software. The receiver has become a program.
Listening and talking#
One honest note before you go shopping. Listening to the open air is generally fine; do check your local rules, and know that some traffic is private by law and should stay that way. Transmitting is different: putting your own waves into the air needs a license. And that license is not a wall, it's a door. It is called ham radio, the exam is friendly, and on the far side of it you may make the sky of chapter 12 bounce for you: speaking around the planet on less power than a reading lamp, even relaying through satellites that amateurs built and launched themselves.
